Program Overview

The LDP is a nine-month certification program that consists of:

  • Online training – a self-paced, asynchronous online course focusing on critical skills, mind sets and tools for law firm leaders
  • Assessments that will help you learn more about yourself, and leading others
  • Monthly emails providing additional leadership insights
  • Monthly cohort video meetings, which will include time for networking, information about the LAW network, and training
  • A leadership workbook for participants to provide reflection and the development of a personal leadership plan

The online training includes modules on:

  • Why do we need strong leadership now?
  • Leadership in legal organizations: shifting from peer to leader role
  • Creating a learning culture.
  • Communication skills
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Giving and receiving feedback; managing difficult conversations
  • Influencing others and persuasion skills
  • Mentoring, coaching and sponsorship: supporting others
  • Stress & resiliency; your health and promoting the health of your team
  • Developing high performing teams
  • Managing teams
  • Leading remote teams
  • Creating a vision and engaging others in it.
  • Developing a strategic plan
  • Encouraging and leading innovation in your firm or department
  • Process improvement for legal
  • Project management
  • Understanding change styles; leading change
  • Leading across boundaries (culture, generation, time zones, status, etc.)
  • Ethical leadership
  • Reflection and developing a leadership plan

Participants should plan to commit two to four hours a month to the program, which includes taking the online class, participating in the monthly cohort meeting, and personal reflection and planning.

Who Should Apply

The program is designed for anyone who is in a leadership role in a law firm, or may be in the future, including:

  • Firm Leadership
  • Practice, Industry or Sector Group Leaders

Facilitator: Mark Beese

Mark Beese will be the facilitator of Leadership Development Program. Mark is President of Leadership for Lawyers, and frequently lectures and trains lawyers and other professionals on techniques for becoming stronger leaders. He provides training, coaching and consulting in the areas of leadership development, innovation, and business development.  Mark is an adjunct faculty at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and former adjunct faculty at the Center for Creative Leadership.  He is a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management and an inductee in the Legal Marketing Association Hall of Fame for lifetime achievement.

Mark is an active volunteer with the World Organization of the Scout Movement. Scouting is the world’s largest youth organization, which provides leadership development opportunities for more than 55 million young people in 172 countries, and has graciously agreed to donate 5% of his fees to the organization.

Registration and First Session

Cohort Kick-Off Dates/Times

This year’s class will launch September 14, 2021, followed by cohort meetings once a month. Graduation from the Leadership Development Program for all participating member firms and participants is currently scheduled for 3 May 2022.

*Some of these times may actually be on 15 September in some time zones, especially those in the Asia Pacific Region.

Attendees at similar leadership training programs are usually charged $3500; however, for the second year running, LAW has negotiated special pricing of $1495 for lawyers and staff of LAW member firms.  Although slightly more than in its inaugural year, this program is still priced at more than 50% off the rack price.  If you register prior to August 20, you can take advantage of a $200 reduction and pay only $1295 for this 9-month course.  The pricing is as follows:
